The couple appeared on the show as part of their 23rd anniversary celebrations this week, and spoke to Holly and Phil about their relationship and overcoming the odds. MaryAnne and Tommy Pilling are considered the first couple with Down’s Syndrome to get married in the UK, tying the knot in 1995 after meeting at a train station in 1990. Despite backlash from people, they beat the odds and are now more in love than ever.
‘I do. I really love her,’ Tommy said when spoken to by Phillip. ‘She’s very vivacious and Tommy’s very quiet,’ explained MaryAnne’s mum. ‘It was definitely a case of opposites attract.’ Tommy later teared up as he spoke about their wedding day, and was consoled by the presenters, his wife and mum-in-law. After their chat, Phillip and Holly revealed that they had got them tickets to the theatre to celebrate their 23rd wedding anniversary.
And because they were so touched by the moment, Phillip announced that he and Holly would also foot the bill for their dinner as well to make sure they had the best day possible. Viewers at home were left emotional by the super cute interview, and also sent in their love and congratulations: ‘Omg the couple on [This Morning] are so adorable. That is what true love looks like.’
