This is 18-month-old Lucas Warren. He’s just a cheeky little baby who enjoys wearing bow ties and driving toy cars.

And on Wednesday, he made history: he’s the first child with Down Syndrome to become Gerber’s ‘Spokesbaby of the year’. Gerber is a baby food and product company which runs a photo competition every year to find their new baby face. And this year, that baby is Lucas.
He fought off more than 140,000 competitors to be crowned baby of the year and he’ll start appearing on Gerber’s social media channels, as well as their ads throughout the year. And his parents will get a $50,000 (£36,000) prize. ‘We hope this opportunity sheds light on the special needs community and educates people that with acceptance and support, individuals with special needs have the potential to change the world – just like our Lucas,’ his mum tells CNN.
Lucas is the first spokesbaby in the company’s 91-year history to have the condition. The Gerber Baby Photo Search began in 1927, when a call was put out for a baby to feature in its ads. Kristin Wooten, spokeswoman for Gerber, tells the network: ‘Every year, since the beginning of the Gerber Baby Photo Search, we choose the baby who exemplifies Gerber’s longstanding heritage of recognizing that every baby is a Gerber baby, and Lucas is a perfect fit’.
